The Mark of Cain, H-Block 101, Giants of science @ The Metro Sydney - July2001

Ya gotta love the rock… Giants Of Science sure do.

A fat rumbling riff sets the tone, the band building a tight pumping progression around it, then caving it in at the frenetic ending.

But there’s more to this lot than punchy riffage. They also drive a nice line in abrasive off-beats, pull off some too-cool tempo shuffles, then soothe us into a nice quiet space, before tearing back into it. Pretty bloody good!

Oi!!

H-Block 101 mostly keep it fast and frantic. Snarling snotty punk is their game.

And believe me, they are tight. Then they kick into some reggae. Not the most original side-step a band of this pedigree can take-but they did it well.

Gonna be huge.

Watching The Mark Of Cain is like crawling through barbed wire, while a psychotic vents his spleen in your ear. The fact that they manage to inject some subtlety amongst this carnage, without dropping the intensity is where this band’s power is at.

They play it hard. Ballistic short sharp grunts. Interloper… Snapping riffs that settle into menacing grooves. Retaliate…

Did a 3 piece ever sound so menacing? Contender… It’s precision stuff, ending with a blistering version of Point Man.

Relentless!
