Mode 9, Speedball & Low Ride @ Cremorne Hotel Sydney .April 13, 2002.

Updated: May 15, 2018

A last minute pullout by Noogie (due to illness) was a bit of a bummer, but it didn’t detract from the night overall. A way cool new venue that’s a step up from your average rock-pig swill barn, the upstairs room at The Cremorne has plenty of class, with a bunch of booths and plenty of seating, as well as room to shake your thing.

More of a club than a pub feel, it definitely has the potential to become the primo northside venue. It only happens monthly at the mo, but that’s sure to change.

Low Ride kick off the night with their three-way rock chamber. Solid choc chip monsters that romp and stomp their way all around that big room. Tight, intense, sharp, shattering rhythms that throw plenty of meat into the gravy.

Chunk-a-chunk one minute, swirling all crazed like the next. Chunky thru and thru. They’ve got an EP doing the rounds, so hook into it.

Speedball  pump a little more fun into the equation. Sweet guitar, nifty dynamics and heaps of jump-ass squelch. SK8 punk at times, melodious thrash at others. Little pop-topped nuggets, power pellets and plenty o’ pace all the way along that ragged track.

Confidence. Kooky facials. Energy, punch, fun! Hell, we even get a drum solo intro into …wait for it…My Sharona…I kid ya not. A nice lidl touch of retro…and along with lyrics like You Suck, You Suck, You were a lousy fuck…you know we’re talking class act all the way!

Stepping into the headline slot, Mode 9 waste no time in getting into that intense, dark rummaging that loiters and loots in its own wickedly menacing way.

Block solid like a leaden smack in the mouth. Powerful, bludgeoning riffs that streamroll their way home.

Shane Daley’s staunch, frontal presence and assertive vox a big part of the picture. Touches of Faith No More, dishings of Rage, but in the end it’s all Mode 9.

Vocals that boom home. Beats that bite, and riffs that rifle and rummage. Slick and brutal all rolled into one. An album on the way…you have been warned! Mark Fraser- redbackrock.com
