J Eleven, Zero Sum, Dappled Cities Fly@ Surf Rock Sydney, July 2001

WIth a new venue disappearing each and every week, it's great to see someone getting off their arse and doing something about it.

Upstairs at The Surf Rock Cafe Collaroy (Sydney), has been totally transformed and is now firing each weekend as a live venue for local up & coming indie bands....

We'd all been hanging to catch another glimpse of young Sydney popsters Dappled Cities Fly since our first encounter a little while back, and on this particular night, they could do no wrong.

Wicked dynamix, splattered with moods that pause then explode in the most popnificent of ways.

Instantly memorable, cascading melodies that are warm, easy and as smooth as bubblegum.

Their softer moments seem to work a little better, but the rock journeys are no less commanding.

From tender to turgid in a flash, these guys definitely have stardom in their sights.Expect big things!

Zero Sum on the other hand, are a lot more ragged in the noise stakes. Raw as fuck, and more than a little off in the vox department.

Sure they are obviously early stages as a band, but hell, we all started in the garage. Some of us just shoulda stayed there!

Guitar down, and we put a little more groove into the equation, until it all turns crazy horse again.

Metallica cops a workover towards the end, but it's all too loose for these ears. Sorry guys, keep at it!

Home town heroes J Eleven have been around the traps for a while, and it shows from the outset.

A bit Mid-West Americana sounding at times, these guys are polished to the nth degree.

Sure it's rock at the commercial end of the scale, but they do it so well.

And any band that sings about Kerouac is okay by me.

Tight as & rock hard!
